Teaching the Art of Ed Parker's Kenpo Karate

"I come to you with only Karate, empty hands, I have no weapons, but should I be forced to defend myself, my principles or my honor; should it be a matter of life or death, of right or wrong; then here are my weapons Karate, my empty hands."  - Ed Parker

"It is the beginner who observes complexities in the Art. Not until he is involved and proficient will he view complexities to be no more than simplicity compounded".
Ed Parker

All of Parkers' principles and concepts are built around a vocabulary of motion and as he explains it, we must be able to pronounce each movement (just as we learned to pronounce each letter and word as a child) before we can move on to complex sentences or movements. We must master the basics before we master the more advanced.

Kenpo techniques are based on principles and concepts which rely on a correct and strong foundation. You must have a strong and solid base in order to make the techniques work properly and with maximum force and accuracy.

There are different stages of karate -- from learning the basic steps (Embryonic) to learning and understanding techniques (Mechanical) to the Spontaneous stage where the response to an attack is instinctive and flows naturally without thinking. By properly learning the basics, and creating for yourself a strong foundation, you will see the differences in the strength of your techniques.
